Johnny Depp resigns from the role of Grindelwald

Johnny Depp enchanted fans as the series’ main villain, Grindelwald, who was mentioned a fair amount in the Harry Potter books! Following the court case with his ex-wife Amber Heard, Johnny Depp made the following statement on 6th November 2020, announcing that he’d be resigning from the role of the lead antagonist…

Despite having resigned from the role, Depp is still to receive $10 million for the one scene he already filmed as the film’s villain.

Fans of the actor have started a petition to bring Johnny Depp back to Fantastic Beasts. At the time of writing this, the petition has over 114,000 signatures. Warner Bros. are unlikely to change their stance.

When is Fantastic Beasts 3 coming out?

The film had originally been set for a November 2021 release. However, given that the main villain has to now be re-cast, Warner Bros. have announced that they’re pushing the release back to 15 July 2022.

Grindelwald re-casting

With shooting already underway, it’s key for Warner Bros. to find a replacement for Depp pretty speedily. They’re reportedly already in talks with Mads Mikkelsen. No stranger to playing villains, the Danish actor portrayed the infamous Dr Lecter in three successful series of Hannibal, and he also played Le Chiffre in Casino Royale!

What will Fantastic Beasts 3 be called?

The official title for the film has not yet been released by Warner Bros., JK Rowling, or any of the cast. We’ll keep you updated as soon as it’s released.

How many Fantastic Beasts films will there be?

In 2016, it was announced by JK Rowling that the Fantastic Beasts series would run for five films. Chronologically,the series will start in 1926 with Fantastic Beasts and Where t Find Them, and end in 1945 with the as-yet-untitled fifth installment.

Who takes down Grindelwald?

In the Harry Potter books, Dumbledore describes a great global wizarding war that was started by Grindelwald. To bring it to an end, in 1945, Dumbledore destroys the vile that was preventing him from harming Grindelwald, and the two wizards have ‘the greatest wizarding dual in history.’ During the dual, Dumbledore’s sister, Ariana, was struck by a curse, and died. Dumbledore won the dual, and Grindelwald was imprisoned in Nurmengard castle; a wizarding prison, and remains there until 1998.

Who killed Grindelwald in Harry Potter

In the Harry Potter books, when he is looking for the Elder Wand in 1998, Voldemort visits Grindelwald in his cell in Nurmengard, to question him on the wand’s location. Grindelwald refuses to tell him, however, and taunts the Dark Lord. Voldemort uses to Killing Curse to end Grindelwald’s life.
